The idea for this site has its roots in presentations that were made to Scottish Companies in 1995 as part of an initiative taken by the Scottish Development Agency of the time to encourage the understanding and implementation of Just In Time (JIT) techniques in manufacturing
One thing that became very clear from the outset of the discussions was that the greatest hurdle to making the necessary investment for the introduction of JIT practices was in overcoming the ‘set in concrete’ rules that Company Accounting seemed to have, such as Return on Investment, Discounted Cash Flow and just about every financial obstacle that could be found to prevent the advancement of both the thinking and the eventual introduction of a most radical change to manufacturing management. Even quite senior managers were overawed by the complexities that were being put in the way. So I decided to disturb a hornets nest by presenting a paper called ‘Who Needs Accountants?’ and specifically invited financial directors to attend. Needless to say the audience was divided on the one side who agreed with me that accountants were no longer the major contributors to business decisions and in fact the tools were available to eliminate the majority of them from the day to day involvement with Company accounts, and on the other hand the professionals who wanted to retain their position of some significant power
