Who are we ?

Doing Your Own Accounts is a site dedicated to helping SMEs, Start Ups and Charities deal with their accounting requirements by providing help in the selection and use of a range of facilities from a simple set of hand written records for start-up and low income businesses to the most sophisticated set of tools that are readily available and well tried to be suitable for the type and size of business and its growth. We have included some information on our founder and our experience

Why are we here ?

Because of the manner in which the need for accounts is presented, mainly by the accounting profession themselves, the SMEs, Start Up and Charity organisers are generally made to look upon the task as being both complicated and time consuming and, especially at start-up, most SMEs are scared off from doing it themselves

Why Doing Your Own Accounts ? We have found that in many cases these services are provided by people who do not understand the specific business and have only one aim in mind, to make money for themselves. Customer Service generally becomes a secondary aspect of that objective. To us, the person best able to understand the business is the owner and its people and if they can get to know the rudiments of accounting then, when they have grown enough to need professional help, they will know how to select the service that will give them real value for their money

There is nothing magic about keeping sufficient records to be able to satisfy tax legislation but, more importantly, to know how the enterprise is performing. You can do this without the need for expensive accountants and the money and time you save can be put to better use for growing your business or for your intended charitable purposes . Doing Your Own Accounts will lead you to a point where you will know enough to be able to be very selective in choosing the help you will then need, to deal with the more complex aspects of financial management and taxation that larger organisations inevitably encounter and can more easily afford

What does this site offer ?

This site provides access to assistance for Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs), Start Ups and Charities that will allow their own people to maintain sufficient financial records in order to be Doing Your Own Accounts to keep track of their financial performance, to conform with Charity Regulations and to make an annual, on-line, tax return as well as to provide the mandatory VAT return for those businesses whose income over any 12 month period is at least £67,000 or for those who volunteer to be registered

Such records will also form the basis of the information required to run the business successfully

The Doing Your Own Accounts site will help you with the choice of suitable facilities for using simple hand written records, including the provision of a start up kit for the new entrepreneur, an automated spreadsheet system allowing simple record keeping on a Personal Computer, the selection of suitable software to allow for the use of computer assisted record keeping and the specification and selection of complete Personal Computer systems

We also provide a regularly updated Manual that is intended to assist the start-up, small business and charity with the understanding, the establishment, the maintenance and the application of their accounts. This is one of our eBooks which are published

In all cases, on-line assistance is provided by Doing Your Own Accounts staff to ensure the efficient management of payables (what cash has yet to be paid), receivables (what cash is due to be received), cash on hand and cash in the bank. With more sophisticated systems, help is also provided for the measurement of performance, managing inventory (parts and materials used in the products sold) and assets (those bits of equipment used to make product and to run the business). Full instructions of the use of the materials in the start up kit are provided

What are the benefits
for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), Start Ups and Charities ?

With Doing Your Own Accounts, SMEs, Start Ups and Charities can get to learn how to measure their own operating performance, to recognise the need for, and the effects of change through the data provided by their accounts, provide more timely and accurate financial information, make their accounts available to the Charities regulator where necessary and to make tax returns in a timely manner whilst using their hard earned income more cost effectively by making use of their own staff !! But, just as important, the Trustees of a Charity and the owners of the SME and Start Up will get to know enough of the accounting gobbledegook to be able to talk sensibly with any of the 'accountants' that they may need to seek to employ in the future. The Doing Your Own Accounts start up kit will also provide all of the necessary materials and instructions on their use to ensure that the accounting side of the enterprise is taken care of in a well organised and simple to use manner
