About 'Doing Your Own Accounts'
© Copyright 2005 - 2010

In just about every case of a start up Enterprise or Company and Charity, the task of keeping records of income and expenditure is a new experience and generally one that is not considered a major contributor to the normal objective of the business. Whilst the focus of the managers of the business should be firmly set on doing the things they do well, inevitably they finish up spending an excessive amount of time on 'the books'. Even with hired help from 'accountants' there is little respite since, because their business is unique, they are the only ones who really know how the business works. So they finish up spending time explaining the transactions that they have carried out in the past. At best the return on the continuing, relatively high cost of an 'accountant' will result in properly organised accounts and an acceptable annual report to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (previously known as the Inland Revenue - more likely as the Taxman !!). At worst they might get some cursory comments on what the managers themselves are doing. In either case the costs are unnecessary since enough can be done by existing staff
